the Rootd experience was a very personal one. I have found other residential (providers) try to cater to too many children at once and the instructor is always someone different, so the children don’t get to develop relationships. Our experience with Rootd was the exact opposite
Redbridge Primary School, based in London, embarked on a two-night residential adventure with Rootd for their Year 6 pupils (ages 10-11). As a school that values resilience, independence, and immersion in nature, they sought an experience that would challenge and inspire their students—many of whom rarely get the chance to engage with the natural world.
In addition to fostering confidence and teamwork, affordability was a key consideration to ensure accessibility for all families, particularly in the wake of the cost-of-living crisis.
Seamless Planning and Support
Ms Porter, Assistant Head and Year 5 & 6 Lead at Redbridge Primary shared how “the booking of our residential was exceptionally smooth and the staff have always been so helpful in answering questions.”
A pre-visit was arranged, allowing Redbridge staff to complete a thorough risk assessment while exploring the accommodation, dining facilities, and activity areas with a Rootd team member. This proactive approach ensured peace of mind and helped teachers plan the best possible experience for their pupils.
Building Confidence and Independence
The overarching goal of the trip was to help pupils step outside their comfort zones and develop key life skills. Throughout the experience, Rootd’s team played an instrumental role in achieving this.
The instructors built strong relationships with the children, guiding them through various challenges and encouraging them to embrace new experiences. This personal and engaging approach allowed the pupils to become more self-reliant and resilient—crucial attributes as they prepare for secondary school.
Unforgettable Experiences in Nature
“The range of activities they were able to experience, including the campfire and bushcrafting, were activities that almost none of our children had experienced before.” explained Ms Porter. The joy of learning practical outdoor skills, combined with the camaraderie built around the fire, created a sense of adventure and excitement that has stayed with the pupils long after the trip ended.
A Teacher’s Perspective
For the Redbridge staff, one of the most rewarding aspects was seeing how Rootd’s instructors connected with the children. Rather than stepping in too often, the teachers took a step back, allowing pupils to navigate social interactions and challenges on their own. Rootd’s facilitators not only engaged but also truly got to know the children, remembering their names and sharing in their excitement.
Ms Porter highlighted how “the Rootd experience was a very personal one. I have found other residential (providers) try to cater to too many children at once and the instructor is always someone different, so the children don’t get to develop relationships. Our experience with Rootd was the exact opposite.”
Bringing the Lessons Back to the Classroom
Beyond the adventure itself, the trip had a lasting impact back in school. Pupils returned with newfound friendships and a sense of self-assurance that translated into their everyday learning. The independence and resilience they developed on the trip continue to be nurtured within the classroom, reinforcing the personal growth that took place during their time away.
A Residential Unlike Any Other
Having previously attended residentials with other providers, Redbridge staff found the Rootd experience to be uniquely personal and impactful. Where other trips felt impersonal and overcrowded, Rootd’s approach ensured continuity, with the same instructors working closely with pupils from start to finish. This consistency created a safe and supportive environment where children could truly flourish.
Looking Ahead to Future School Residentials
Such was the success of the trip that Redbridge Primary School has already booked their next two school residential trips with Rootd. The combination of adventure, personal growth, and expert facilitation made it an unforgettable experience for all involved. As they prepare for their next journey, staff and pupils alike eagerly anticipate another opportunity to create lifelong memories.
