Giving children the edge
Introducing our EDGE Framework -delivering activities with outcomes

At Rootd, we’re committed to helping children develop the skills they need to achieve their goals and be the best they can be.
And we believe outdoor education has a crucial role to play.
When children take part in well-planned outdoor activities, they have a chance to step out of their comfort zone, challenge themselves, discover new talents and find out just what they’re capable of.
As well as developing their practical skills, this helps them to build essential life skills, such as teamwork and problem solving, while growing in confidence, resilience and self-belief.
To ensure every Rootd activity is designed with this in mind, we work to our EDGE Framework.
The EDGE Framework
Designed around the English Outdoor Council’s ten outcomes of high-quality outdoor education, our EDGE Framework guides the development of our activity programme, making sure every activity we deliver meets a minimum of three outdoor learning objectives.
During our activities, we encourage children to:
Engage
- Appreciate the benefits of health and fitness
- Become receptive to the natural environment
- Display increased motivation and appetite for learning
Discover
- Broaden their horizons
- Learn and develop new skills and knowledge
Grow
- Develop self-awareness and social skills
- Build communication, problem solving, leadership and teamwork
- Demonstrate increased initiative, self-reliance, responsibility, perseverance, tenacity and commitment
Enjoy
- Develop a positive attitude to learning and adventure
- Build confidence and character through taking on new challenges and achieving success

Activities with EDGE
When you browse our activities, you’ll see that every activity has been assigned one or more of our EDGE icons.
This allows you to quickly see how each activity benefits children and contributes towards a positive outdoor learning experience.
Every activity will always meet at least three of the ten learning objectives listed above.

Bringing EDGE to life
To bring the EDGE Framework to life for children on camp, after every activity we take time to reflect on the session.
Using our EDGE activity cards, we encourage children to think about what they achieved during the session, what skills they’ve learned and what they’ll remember in the future.
These important few minutes of reflection give children the time to fully absorb what they’ve learned during the session, so they leave feeling positive, proud and full of self-confidence.
