6 Things to Consider When Planning Your Year 6 Residential Trip

27 February 2026

A year 6 residential trip is often one of the most memorable experiences of a child’s time in primary school. For schools, this can make it a big planning responsibility. From budgeting and safety to selecting the right trip provider to meet your objectives, there’s a lot to do to ensure the trip is enjoyable for pupils and stress-free for teachers.
This guide looks at why Year 6 residentials are important and outlines the key factors to consider when planning a successful Year 6 trip.

Why Year 6 residential trips are so important

Year 6 is a significant year for pupils as they face the challenges of SATs and prepare for the transition to secondary school, while developing their independence and strengthening friendships.

A residential trip provides a unique opportunity to help support this growth outside the classroom, through shared challenges, teamwork and responsibility.

When well planned, a residential trip can boost confidence, improve social skills and encourage resilience – setting pupils up for success beyond Year 6.

What to consider when planning your Year 6 residential trip

As an experienced school trip provider, we’ve seen how careful planning by schools can ensure their residential lives up to their expectations and is an experience their pupils will remember for years to come.

This is what we recommend to schools:

1. Start with clear aims and objectives

Before choosing a provider, it’s important to think about what you want pupils to gain from the experience.

Consider:

  • Is the focus on building confidence and independence?
  • Do you want to strengthen teamwork and friendships?
  • Are there clear curriculum links?
  • Or is it purely a celebration at the end of the year, where having fun is the priority?

This will determine which activities you choose – whether adrenaline-fuelled activities and team-building challenges are your focus, or whether nature-based activities are more in line with your aims for the trip.

Once you have clear objectives, choosing timings and a provider who can help you meet them will become much easier.

2. Choose the right time of year for your Year 6 residential

One of the most important decisions when planning a Year 6 residential is when to go. Both autumn and summer trips are popular, but each has its own distinct benefits.

Autumn residential trips

For many schools, choosing a Year 6 residential trip in autumn can be particularly beneficial.

Taking place early in the academic year, autumn residentials are ideal for:

  • Building class bonds at the beginning of the year
  • Establishing expectations and teamwork for the year ahead
  • A more affordable option out of peak season – keeping the costs more manageable for parents

 Summer Residential Trips

Summer residentials are often a chance to celebrate after SATs and are ideal for:

  • Building confidence and self-belief in preparation for the secondary school transition
  • Sharing a final adventure together at the end of primary school
  • Ending primary school with some amazing memories that will last a lifetime!

3. Consider budget and affordability

Cost is a key consideration for schools and families, and ensuring your trip is inclusive and allows for the best possible pupil participation is key. When planning your residential trip:

  • Set a realistic per-pupil budget
  • Look for providers with flexible payment plans that will help families to budget
  • Consider additional costs, such as coach costs, and think how you can keep these lower if required

4. Be mindful of location and travel logistics

The location of your residential can have a big impact on pupil experience and the workload of staff when preparing for the trip.

Key factors to consider are:

  • Travel time – how long will you be on the coach and will this impact on the time available to enjoy activities?
  • Coach costs – these have risen in recent years, so does this mean you should look for somewhere closer to home?
  • Surroundings – do you want a more rural location with plenty of woodland to explore or are you looking for a more structured environment?

5. Look for accreditation and good risk management

Safety will be a top priority for you when planning your Year 6 trip, so make sure you choose an accredited provider who can provide comprehensive risk assessments.

Providers who hold the Learning Outside the Classroom accreditation (LOtC) have been assessed against a rigorous framework that evaluates the quality, safety and educational value of their school residentials, as well as their safeguarding procedures and emergency planning.

Ensuring staff are experienced and highly trained, with enhanced DBS checks and up-to-date qualifications, will also help to make sure your trip goes smoothly.

6. Give parents plenty of notice

Regular and timely communication builds trust and confidence, as well as helping to boost pupil participation. Aim to launch your trip to parents as soon as you’ve booked your preferred dates and then keep them informed about key payment dates.

To build parental support for the trip:

  • Send them a parent guide with information about the trip provider, onsite activities and accommodation
  • If you can, arrange for your trip provider to visit your school and present the trip to parents. This will help with any questions or concerns

And enjoy the build up!

Your Year 6 pupils are bound to be excited about the trip, so enjoy telling them more about what they can expect and all the adventures they’re going to experience.

Whether in the autumn or summer, a well-planned Year 6 residential trip is more than just a few days away. It’s an opportunity to support independence, encourage resilience, strengthen friendships and prepare pupils for their next chapter.

We hope you have a great time!
