Our talented staff play a crucial role in the success of our school residential trips, and we’re always on the lookout for likeminded, enthusiastic instructors to join our team.
How it began
At Rootd, we know it’s a privilege to be able to work in the outdoors, doing what we love. But none of us found this path on our own – we’ve all benefitted from the help and guidance of mentors along the way.
So, when we first launched Rootd, we knew that we wanted to do the same for other young people who may not have the support we had. We spent time researching the ways we could help, and when we were approached by Inside Out Recruitment London, we knew we’d found the perfect partner.
Working with youth groups in London, Inside Out connects young people, who may be facing social, economic or personal challenges, with employment opportunities in the outdoor sector.
And that’s how the Rootd Academy was born.
How we help
The Rootd Academy provides a wider range of experiences and opportunities than more traditional apprenticeships. In partnership with Inside Out, we give young people from London the chance to join Rootd for a ten-month period to gain well-rounded experience of working in outdoor education.
Working as a paid, full-time employee, they become part of the delivery team, helping to run our school residential trips. During their time with us, they have the opportunity to gain qualifications, including Level 3 Outdoor First Aid and Level 2 Advanced Safeguarding Children.
Beyond the outdoors
But their experience isn’t limited to outdoor education. In the quieter months, they work in other parts of the business to help broaden their skillset.
This could be working with the sales team to generate leads or supporting our finance team with the bookkeeping – anything that contributes to the success of the business.
Future employment
The academy finishes with a guaranteed interview for any permanent positions we’re recruiting for at the time. This is a great opportunity for them to show what they’ve learned and take pride in their achievements.
But this isn’t the route everyone will choose to take. If it doesn’t feel quite right for them, we’ll help them to identify other opportunities outside outdoor education. If they’ve enjoyed supporting our sales team and go on to secure a role as a salesperson in a car garage, that’s still success for us!
What’s important is that we’ve helped someone to broaden their horizons and given them opportunities they might not have had outside the academy.

During your time with us, you’ll learn new practical skills and gain qualifications to enhance your CV, as well as developing your own interpersonal and communication skills – setting you up for future success in your chosen career.
What you need to know
The academy is for committed young people between the ages of 16 and 19, running from September - July or February – November. You’ll be working 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
You’ll also benefit from free accommodation and food throughout the week to ensure you can make the most of your time with us.
And most importantly, you’ll become a valued member of our friendly Rootd team, who will show you the ropes and give you all the support and guidance you need to thrive in your new role.
